| Design Question on Base Orientation for Making Tracks | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | crsolomon | Community Tracks | |
| Simple question on orientation of the designs that are not symmetric - what is the correct "top" point to use as the bottom and top of the design? I assume that the 0,1 point is the "top" of the table and base the design off that reference point. I have seen in the tracks that are in the Library that there is a range of choices - the face and serpent designs have a different base than the sailboat. I have written programs that can output a design in any angle, but I wonder if there are "rules" that should be set or followed. Any comments? | |||||

So I did what I always did: hard power cycled it by just unplugging it. This time it came up, but when I opened the app, I saw a notice I'd never seen before, saying the table had been improperly shut down, that a file error had been fixed, and that the table may have been reset to factory defaults as part of that fix -- which I discovered it had been. SERIOUSLY!? "Hey, your table wo ...

You can have any combination of those-- a track that starts and ends at the edge (11), starts at the edge and goes to the center (10), etc. Some tracks are reversible. The erase track is one of those, and it's super Simple. It has two lines that read like this, in non-math terms: - Start in the center- Go to the edge, but take the long WAy around Because it's reversible when you play the erase track the first thing the table does is check to see where the ball is. | Thanks Dithermaster. This WAs a very Simple and clear explanation. Now that I am more aware of how the tracks work, I can identify issues like some tracks looking odd or poor starting in reverse. I have taken to solve this by using erase tracks or the e10 track to return the ball to the desired location. Also, your sunburst track is currently my favorite! And there are some others I really enjoy like tri4 and wormhole. Thank you for making those available! Andy

| Thanks @robin & @kristoffer. I would second Kristoffer regarding a pause for a length of time rather than an indefinite pause; however, I believe that the app is Simple to run and uncluttered at this time. Additional bells and whistles could start making the app ungainly and too overly complicated | |||||

| Heh! I grew up 2 blocks from Clancy's Drug Store at 50th & France, and I agree about the spherical snowplow idea. I don't doubt that you've considered this issue for years, nor that it's a difficult puzzle. Whether we think of physics as Simple or not, though, a berm does accrete. (I went with accumulate the first time, so this time I'll try accrete...) I mean, I'm looking at it right now, and this is after only five days of use since the last time I crossed my fingers and hoisted the glass so I could mitigate it. It's not an existential problem, but it does lead to some thin spots at the perimeter, and if you're borderline OCD like me, it's an unscratched itch. I had in mind a track that emulates the zigzag motion of apache or peon1, but which begins at rho=1.N. I could probably write that track, but I would fumble the part where it avoids the ballpark. Don't you even have an experimental script lying around that you could share? It needn't be a thing of beauty, just a hack to eliminate wrasslin with the heavy glass. (On the smaller table, obviously, it's not an issue.) I'm a tireless promoter of your product. Anyone who asks gets a ten-minute spiel on its elegance and beauty. I bought it when I decided to build a DIY automated sand table, and after calculating what I would need to buy, and the hours I would have to invest, it turned out that I could purchase a Sisyphus coffee table for less it would cost to make my own, and into the bargain, yours comes with a body of tracks and a community of trackmongers. I adore the thing. I would never tell anyone "Don't buy it, sand builds up at rho>1!" I just wish I didn't have to lift the glass and remove the ring to return the sand to rho<1. | |||||
| Maintenance track wish | 3 Relevance | 5 years ago | adambrower | Table Usage | |
| As several other users have noted, Simple physics makes it inevitable that sand will accumulate at Rho 1.0. On tables set up for 2-ball, the presence of the ballpark makes it far from trivial to craft a script that will plow that sand back to Rho<1. To make life easier for those of us with large tables configured for 2-ball, I wish @Bruce or @Matt would take a few minutes to craft a track that moves the sand back to rho<1. I'm very tired of hoisting the glass, grooming sand, and then finding the rubber bumpers that have escaped before replacing it. I know that current policy is to deprecate 2-ball products going forward, but perhaps the "plow-in" script could be propagated only to owners of large tables configured for 2-ball. I promise not to share the script, nor to pester the support team if the script misbehaves. | |||||

From there you should be able to figure out the analogous head ball parking tracks. However - we are not recommending doing so. I WAs initially excited when I discovered the ability to add 2-ball function, and the WAy it can produce very nice patterns with some algorithmic tracks. And the ball park is designed symmetrically because head-ball parking WAs planned. But we've recently stopped shipping with 2-ball mode, and are moving away from of ...

My goal then - creating single, continuous paths that look cool both while being drawn and when completed - remains the same now. | Welcome to our community! Though an unusual entrance route, we WAnt to support an open sharing of ideas. In answer to your question, in the Sisyphus coordinate system, positive Theta is CW. This is opposite of convention, where Theta = 0 is shown at 3 o'clock, and positive movement is CCW. The reason behind this "choice" WAs a Simple error of mine during early development (where trials of multiple different mechanical and electrical configurations frequently flipped the directionality of the steppers). | ... or correct: All track files (filename.thr), must start with their Rho value either 0 or 1, and end with Rho either 0 or 1 - end and start Rho can be the same. I chose to start with this limitation so that tracks could easily be linked together without distracting traces connecting a new track's start to the last track's end. Therefore, there are four track "flavors": 00, 01, 10, 11. If a track finishes playing at Rho = 1, and the next track's start Rho is 0, the program will try to reverse the track - which will works for 01 and 10 tracks. If reversing d ...

| RE: creating new tracks | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | dithermaster | Community Tracks | |
| Things I've learned from Bruce: 1) It's as Simple as you're figured out, and there is (currently) nothing more. As you said, the table interpolates between adjacent positions, but in polar space, not cartesian. No speed changes, no comments. 2) When you start a track from the interface, it "homes" the table first, which takes it to 0,0. But during regular normal or shuffle playback a track will start from where the previous track ended (either r=0 or r=1. All tracks should both start and end with r=0 or r=1 but never anything else. The table will skip tracks that don't connect to the previous track. Tracks that start on the opposite side as they end can be played in reverse to make connections. 3) Only if you ssh into the rPi. Then they are in a directory somewhere. "erase.thr" is just like you said (two points with much wrap). The reason it goes 2x faster is because it is named "erase.thr" (the firmware special-cases that filename). Bruce is considering how to extend the path files to add speed changes and maybe some other things (I've summited a large treatise on path sets that could be randomly selected between, and variations for different sized tables, etc.) | |||||

| Back in 2008 I started working on a sand table that WAs inspired by Bruce's work. I didn't complete it then, but last fall I resumed work on it. During my new build I discovered Jeff's Sandify project (thread) and his work is great! But before discovering Sandify I had already built some patterns using Processing. Rather than try to learn Sandify's Node + React framework I'm going to focus on building patterns using the tools I already know (). Unfortunately that does mean some redundant work. At first, I just figured that it WAs just something to expect/deal with even though it never made a lot of sense to me why it would be happening at all. But this problem seems to be getting worse and worse -- to the point now where it will just stop completely for periods of time in the middle of a track.
