| ... and takes a light reading about 20 times a second. These are then averaged / filtered, and a "guess" is made about the ambient lighting in the room. This works pretty well in most situations, but has limitations (people's floors vary). It is a nice feature, in that usually the lighting level you WAnt during the day will be far brighter than desired once the sun goes Down. Since conditions vary from site to site, the brightness slider is still active - but instead of it being the only control (as it is when auto-dim is disabled), its setting is combined wit ... | |||||
| RE: Mini surging/accelerating | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage | |
| Hi @mikewand14 - Glad to hear you and your family are enjoying it! I can see the periodic acceleration / deceleration in your video - but this is within what I consider "normal" Sisyphus function. There are several reasons for ball velocity to vary during track play. The primary one is that the robotic mechanism that moves the magnet(s) has mass, and therefore, the motion control software is designed to slow Down before a corner so it doesn't make a Knocking sound (the sharper the corner the more the decel). That is why you see it happen on the track in your video repeatedly. I wrote this code, and it isn't perfect - when the ball is moving mostly in the rotational axis (Theta), and followed by a mostly in/out linear more (Rho), it doesn't always match the velocities perfectly. This will get tweaked in the future, and may help it look better to you. Lastly, you will notice that the ball "stutters" (wobbles) a bit at times. This is because the sand grains are not negligible in size compared to the ball, and they perturb it. This, plus the inherent flexibility of the magnetic coupling, lends itself to the ball's velocity "bouncing" a bit at certain speeds and sand depths. Hopefully, the velocity variation you're seeing doesn't spoil the effect. | |||||
| Single-step mode? | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | john.hughan | App Updates | |
| I stumbled across the Sisyphus coffee table and WAs enthralled. While I enforced a mandatory "sleep on it" period before purchasing, I started looking into the custom track options like Sandify, Sisyphus for the Rest of Us, and Text Generator -- in addition to trying to wrap my head around theta/rho movement instructions in general, which WAs a completely new concept for me. Of course all of that research just ended up sealing the deal. 🙂 But now I'm wondering if there is -- or might someday be -- a WAy to run the table in "single-step" mode. By that I me ... | |||||

| A carriage approaches! Mechanical build is coming along nicely. I have a laser cut turntable with 480 teeth, slide mechanism is bonded precisely using alignment holes. I have the optical limit for theta using a short piece of black zip tie. Now the hard part: I have to get this precision machine to mate to the table that is anything but precise. The band isn't round, or even oval. It is kind of egg shaped? The legs aren't at 90°, and there are only 4 screws holding Down the top, but 5 holes. Time to abandon the futuristic machinery in favor of old fashioned paper templates. Attachment : Undercarriage.jpg | |||||

| There is a reboot process for the strip so it can figure out how long it actually is. 🙂 Unplug the strip power adapter from mains power. While unplugged, add your strip extensions. After adding strips, plug the power adapter back into mains power. Press the button on the LIFX Z controller, for 1 second. The strip will flash, and 'chase' from the connector, Down to the end of the strips. All the strips will light up, and you can control the whole strip. | |||||

| ... My power supply and step Down converter are able to power the accessories noted above, along with the Raspberry Pi, and motor hat without breaking a sweat. Now, on to the prototyping stage! In order to make real progress, I had to make the hard decisions about the physical limits of my table: The Rho is going to be from 0 to 1 with no overrun. I don't need to WAtch out for the ball parks, because they won't be in the drawing area. The radius for the drawing area is 171mm. This fits tightly inside the legs of the table I bought. There is a bit of extra r ... | |||||
| RE: Adding Bottom Cover to Deter Cats, Toddlers from Investigating Wiring? | 2 Relevance | 7 years ago | bryshome | Table Customization | |
| ... Since the stock screws are pan head on the top (to clear the magnet arms) and use wing nuts on the bottom, you need to be careful in your spacing to minimize the remaining screw length at the top to provide movement clearance. The longer screws needed for spacing meant I needed to install with the head Down. It is very sturdy and can support anything you may WAnt to add since it’s a mid room power source. With the additional space I may add an Echo Spot under the table to aide in mic reception. Btw, the power strip I added is Alexa controllable, and the ou ... | |||||

It just never sees it for some reason - but the web browser version works. I would leave the sisyphys app page up and running so i could always check on what it's up to, skip a track, etc. My theory is that there's a memory leak in leaving that app open which slowly causes the cpu in the table to slow Down. I FEEL (very unscientific) that when I reboot the table and just don't touch the app, that the stuttering problem goe ...

Things that might have caused this: My WiFi base station WAs power-cycled 3-4 times in the past week for unrelated reasons The Sisyphus table has been power-cycled 5-10 times since it arrived 2 weeks ago I have observed that some settings, specifically brightness and/or auto-brightness tick-box, are forgotten after a table power-cycle. I suspect the WiFi name and/or password is also fragile or not durable. I work in technology and I’m a great troubleshooter and good at isolating problems. I purchased a cord protector like I had for other items that run a cord a distance from a WAll outlet for the Sisyphus but the ferromagnet in the middle has to be forced into the protector, and leaves a hump, which I don't expect to be a problem, but you get my point. Thanks! PS: As a further idea, have the power plug be one of those "Low Profile" plugs that point Down instead of out, i.e. Attachment : IMG_1494.jpg
| Apostrophe in table name prevents connecting? | 2 Relevance | 7 years ago | RetiredGuy | Connectivity | |
| I have had my table for 4 days and it has been working fine. I have been able to connect both through the iOS app and through Chrome on my Mac. I recently renamed my table from “Sisyphus” to “Doug’s Sisyphus” and have been unable to communicate with it since. I have tried powering Down my network and then the Sisyphus network appears on both the iPhone and Mac, but neither the iOS app or the browser can find the table. I have reseated all of the cables. The power supply has a steady blue light. The red light on Raspberry Pi board is on steady. The green LEDs on the Light Board are as follows: 12v solid; 3.3v solid; first USB blinking; second USB off. What should I try next? | |||||

| ... via that route, but we haven't dived into it (yet). The Down-side of LIFX Z is that the "quantum" of control is a group (zone) of 6 RGBW LED's, and I'm assuming the circuitry on their strips is proprietary, and takes advantage of being able to use 24V (as opposed to 5V for all other individually addressable LED strips). I'm guessing the 6 LEDs in each zone are wired in series makeing it possible to use a higher voltage, and hence far lower power supply current to produce the same WAttage. I'll be posting soon about our prelim findings comparing LIFEX Z to " ... | |||||

It's called "rho_offset_check.thr" and I put a copy of it here: (right-click and Download, then upload to table (see instructions here: ) When you run this track, if your side-to-side is fine then the line will be continuous (like you could drive Down it straight). If it's offset, the line will have a "jog" in it (or a little semicircle at the center of the table). If that's the case, you can work with SI to fix it. I haven't done it, but I think you drop the mechanism and pivot the spring arm. Maybe you can even get to th ...

| I did flip it upside-down! I just assumed that since you had put them at the top, that WAs the right place for the to be to get the best contrast. 🙂 I could theoretically run them both, but I ended up leaving the original lights unplugged for three reasons: 1) The lifx z has the ability to do any white that I WAnt, so there WAsn't really a good need for the original strip, 2) you can see the strip clearly if you are low (i.e. laying on the couch, so I thought that might be distracting, and 3) I would have had to have made my hole even a tiny bit bigger to g ... | |||||

You can only trim the strips between every 6th light, but it just so happens that it fits PERFECTLY in the 36" table by cutting off just the last two sets of 6. I am going to attach some pictures as promised. I think I can only attache one file per post, so this will be a short collection of posts. First up is a close up of the Life Z cord poking through the slit I made in the velvet. You can see that the velvet lays Down very neatly over/around it. Attachment : IMG_3450.JPG

| RE: Outer two inches of patterns not visible | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage | |
| Hi Hunter - You are not the only one who would prefer the LED shield ring to be smaller, and not overlap the sand field so much. The design process in making this choice WAs a compromise between showing as much of the sand as possible vs. minimizing the potential for direct line of sight to the LED's (which can be very distracting from across a room). This is very angle dependent - not a factor when looking straight Down on the table, but is while seated 3+ meters away - especially with the end table version, since it's LEDs are significantly higher than t ... | |||||
