I have a Metal Coffee Table with RGBW lighting running firmware 1.10.70. Recently I've noticed that if use the Sisyphus iOS app to change the White LED color temperature to any value on the slider other than the center value and then completely quit the app on my iPhone from the multi-tasking interface, when I relaunch the app, after the "Scanning for nearby tables" and "Connecting" phases complete, the table resets the white color temperature to the center value, and the slider in the app is repositioned accordingly. This is 100% reproducible.

There's only so much detail that can be drawn for a particular grain size of sand. Since all tables regardless of diameter use the same sand, and the paths are scaled to fit a table's drawing field, the larger the table, the more apparent detail can be seen in a track as a whole. In the center of some tracks, the details get finer and finer until the sand is too coarse to resolve them.
If you were to take a picture of, say, the central 2 inches of the track drawn, it would show roughly the same amount of detail for the same ball size and amount of sand, regardless of the size of the table. But the features are proportionally larger for a larger table (e.g., the spacing between overlapping paths). For instance, if I take a picture of seash5 drawn on my 22" end table, and I take a picture of the same track drawn on the 36" coffee table, such that the entire Design just fits inside the frame of the photo, then when comparing the two images, the latter will appear to have finer sand and finer details; but if I take both pictures from the same distance from the glass, the sand will have the same apparent size and the same detail, but the path on the larger table will be magnified compared to the smaller table.
Unless there isn't enough sand to draw a path, if you add more sand to the center, what will happen is that the ball will just push it around and leave virtually the same amount of sand behind. If you use a smaller ball, you'll see a little more detail since the ball won't flatten the sand as much (it draws a narrower path with less overlap). I would encourage experimenting with different ball sizes and amounts of sand.
Another interesting possibility is to change the shape of the object pushing the sand--a cylinder, for example (like a hockey puck) might create a different effect than a ball.

Welcome to my world! First off - although I'm pretty sure when it comes to sand plotting, I have more area under the curve than most - I'm no authority. But with regard to compexity - I would divide it, for now, into those tracks that are generated algorithmically, and those not. So the pumpkin track, and any tracks that you recognize (including text), are non-algorithmic. All the others -'crop circles', spikey or swirly/loopy spirals, and fractals - are created via multilayered recipes (instructions) -aka algorithms. Both branches are infinite Design spaces. Markyland created Sisyphus For The Rest Of Us so that people could more easily explore non-alg space. If you're interested in algorithmic pattern space - start googling. All you need to do is place the connect-the-dots in the right order :).
I thought I would express my delight with my 3 footer in a traditional geek WAy: Ask for more features!
Naturally, my real motive is to spark discussion of WAys to enhance it without breaking what makes it so amazing.
Here's a couple of things that have been rattling around my head. I'm sure a few more crazier ideas will shake loose eventually.
Live Title Card. This would be a thin, nearly border-less eInk display that could either sit on the table top or be hung on a WAll nearby. Its Design should scream "museum title card". It could update occasionally ...

upload it and run it on the table - it will erase from the outside to the inside.
use 157.0795 if you WAnt it faster and coarser lines (pi*some even value - 100 and 50 here)
but be aware that any movement to movement near the center except for a long spiral like that will be choppy.
Here is a track I made for just such an occasion.
It draws 100 inward spirals from the outside to center. Named Erase.thr, so the firmware in your table will draw it faster.

Thanks again @dithermaster - another excellent outlining of the current state of things. From memory, I know you can put comments at the start of the track - just use the '#' character at the start of the line. I also comments can be placed among the list of vertices, but not 100% sure without testing it. We do plan to allow track speed to be changed and stipulated in a playlist - and eventually, I hope to have it as part of the thr file itself, akin to the 'F' parameter in a line of G-code, which changes the feedrate.

You are not the only one who would prefer the LED shield ring to be smaller, and not overlap the sand field so much. The Design process in making this choice WAs a compromise between showing as much of the sand as possible vs. minimizing the potential for direct line of sight to the LED's (which can be very distracting from across a room). The circumference of the drawable area on the table’s “canvas” is larger than the circumference of the inner-hole of the top ring. As a result, the outer 1-2 inches of many patterns are not visible unless I look at the table up-close and at an awkward viewing angle. When I compare images of the end table used for your Kickstarter campaign with images of your actual production tables, I can see that the width of the top ring has been increased and that the circumference of the inner hole has been decreased. My gut reaction is that the larger inner hole in the top rings from your pre-production units would have been preferable because it would not have resulted in the outside edges of patterns being obscured. But I'm sure that there must be some good reasons for this that I'm not considering. Could you please explain what the Design considerations were that led you to make this change? Thanks.
To get the read-only benefits, you need to start with the RO image (note: it requires, at least, a 16GB card). There are too many things that could go wrong on an auto-update to this setup, that we do not WAnt to force it on anyone. If you do update to it, the new location for your status.json is /content/status.json, and tracks go in /content/tracks/
As for why your shutdown is causing data loss, I do not know why this particular one is having issues. If the app showed the "Improper Shutdown", I would guess that it WAs unplugged before the shutdown process ...
We understand your frustrations - which is why we've discontinued two-ball mode as a "standard" feature (it can still be ordered as an add-on). Despite our concerted efforts to make it bullet proof, we haven't been able to make it 100% reliable. It's extremely unforgiving (as you've experienced) - any travel past Rho = 1 is at risk of hitting it. And yes, Community tracks may have out of bounds vertices, but they "should" be caught and clamped to 1 by our software. It's evidently not working all the time (and not every user has updated to the most recent firmware).
In answer to your question: The ballpark is affixed using strong double-edged tape (carpet tape). To remove it, carefully work a "blade" (butter knife) in between it and the cushion material it's stuck to. Gently pry the ballpark upward while holding the cushion material down at the rising edge of the ballpark so the cushion separates from it (and isn't pulled up with it).
Anything that's dry should be fine (no WArranty issue). I tried baking soda a few years ago, but powder doesn't look "natural" to me. I didn't understand it fully, until I read The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes (1941). Turns out that if particles are small enough (~100 microns or smaller), they get "sticky" due to Van der WAals force. Though the angle of repose is maybe higher for powder, the WAy the dunes look just doesn't appeal to me. This error does not prevent me from downloading new tracks 100% of the time. Around every 10 to 15 tries I will hit this error message, but the track also successfully downloads. Most of the time when I see this error, the track does not download successfully. Either WAy, this error has effectively halted my ability to download new tracks.

Start and end your tracks either at the center or the edge of the circle. Check the resulting thr file. The rho value of the first and last vertex in the file should be either 0 or 1 (start and end can be the same rho). Rho = 1 is anywhere on your boundary circle.

All track files (filename.thr), must start with their Rho value either 0 or 1, and end with Rho either 0 or 1 - end and start Rho can be the same. I chose to start with this limitation so that tracks could easily be linked together without distracting traces connecting a new track's start to the last track's end. Therefore, there are four track "flavors": 00, 01, 10, 11.
