| Bruce, Have you seen this? I bet there would be huge demand for a scaled-down, table-top version of this. The possibilities for what to Display "inside" are limited only by the imagination. In addition to WAves, you could have dancing fire, bouncing balls, the solar system, three-dimensional versions of the geometric shapes from the Sisyphus table, splattering paint, moving sand, rain, etc, etc. Just like with the Sisyphus table, there could be a multitude of Different animated patterns - with accompanying sound effects - that could be organized in ... | |||||

| I too love Paint mode. I find myself using mostly White (highlights detail), Paint (great for high "delta Theta" tracks), and Rho Fade (great for high "delta Rho" tracks). Dithermaster I don't WAnt to spoil any mystery that you might WAnt to keep in your life, so you might WAnt to skip the rest of this post, but for anyone else who's curious, Paint involves a "brush color" that varies over time. As the ball moves around, it paints table regions with the currently active "brush color", and any region of the table that WAs painted a given color stays that c ... | |||||
| RE: Any way to back up track and playlist libraries? | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | heropup | Table Usage | |
| I can't answer the question about backups, but I can provide some background on the Dropbox tracks. Before the Community tab in the Sisyphus app WAs functioning, some of the earlier recipients of the table (mainly through the Kickstarter campaign) had learned about the track file structure and developed some of their own tracks. The browser version of the app allowed uploading of track files from the computer Directly to the table. So in order to share tracks, some of us uploaded them through various methods (e.g., Dropbox, GitHub, etc.) to make them avai ... | |||||

I'm picturing an expansion where the color picker section of the app with the color wheel and sliders simply has a Save button that would allow you to save the current hex code with a custom name, and then there would be a dropdown with all of those custom names available, where selecting it would jump to that hex code -- but not click Save just in case the user WA ...

| App feature suggestions + bug | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | tgattis | App Updates | |
| Overall, the app is pretty solid (I'm using Android), but there a few minor tweaks that would be nice improvements. 1) The ability to set the pause interval between tracks on the playlist. I really like having it pause so I can admire the finished Design, but I don't like having to open the app to hit Play for the next track every time. I'd prefer to set the pause interval to a couple of hours, which is enough time for me to catch most of the finished Designs without having to pull out the app several times a day to get it started again. 2) Lower priority, but would be nice: the ability to set time windows for lights vs. no-lights (similar to Night Mode). Bright sunlight during the day makes the lights kinda irrelevant, and I'd prefer them to be off (do they burn out after a certain number of hours?), but I do like it brightly lit at night. 3) Testing/bug fix: on a Pixel 3 with Display-Font Size setting set to Largest (us older folks don't have the best reading vision, lol), some screens cut off the bottom, especially key buttons during the set-up process, and the screen wouldn't scroll up. Giving every screen the ability to scroll up would solve the problem. Thanks for considering. Love the table! | |||||

| I found a drawing of the Eagles logo, loaded it into Adobe Illustrator, Did an autotrace and then saved as .svg file for the table. It could have been refined more. I had no luck using with the "Sisyphus for the rest of us" utility. I know my solution is many extra steps. I'm sorry that once I loaded the Design to my table, deleted the original .svg file, and there doesn't seem to be a WAy to download or I'd post it for you Attachment : Capture.PNG | |||||
| RE: DIY Table Theta Question | 2 Relevance | 7 years ago | Bruce | Table Customization | |
| I guess, like most people, I pay most attention to the things that most interest me - in this case, Rho position control is paramount, while Theta is "all relative," As for Sisyphus Designs starting at "12 o'clock" - it never occurred to me to see it that WAy. Designs simply start "where they are" :). The first Design after homing starts at Theta = 0 (regardless of the first Theta coordinate value in the *.thr file). What actual Direction that is in relation to the physical world Didn't concern me (since I create algorithmic tracks). If, however, I WAs using ... | |||||

| I am building my own accent table for my office at work. I am going to add a mechanism inspired by Sisyphus Design, but completely from scratch, with my own software and control. I can post updates if Bruce is OK with it. Question: In order to use community (I also WAnt to publish) tracks, I need one bit of information that has conflicting posts. What Direction would this .thr file be drawn? (0,1) (314.159,0) Positive theta. Is it CCW or CW? There are many posts that explain that theta "home" is at the "top" of a freshly homed start. There are also pos ... | |||||
| How long does table homing take? | 2 Relevance | 7 years ago | ohlrogge | Table Usage | |
| I just received a new 36" Sisyphus table as a gift. I have connected to it via my phone App. I tried running a Design on it. I got a message on my phone saying "HOMING YOUR TABLE This should only take a moment." That WAs about 30 minutes ago and I am still seeing this message. The ball has gone around maybe 60 degrees in a single portion of a circle, and the lights are on. Periodically the ball moves a bit and/or the table beeps. Apart from this nothing is happening. How long is this expected to go on? Is this normal behavior or is this an i ... | |||||

| ... Anyway, some photos are attached comparing the detail. This sand had the following problems: 1. You need to remove or gently crush some globs that form in the bag (I Didn’t, which is why my track looks chunky). 2. The sand contains microscopic bits of iron (probably from the manufacturing process) that cling to the magnetic ball and eventually need to be removed. 3. It is so fine that mistakes and ball-tracks in the Design show, that aren’t supposed to show. 4. It is so fine it looks fake, like moon dust or the playa dust of Burning Man. | RE: Sand level low in middle? | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | heropup | Table Usage | |
| There's only so much detail that can be drawn for a particular grain size of sand. Since all tables regardless of Diameter use the same sand, and the paths are scaled to fit a table's drawing field, the larger the table, the more apparent detail can be seen in a track as a whole. In the center of some tracks, the details get finer and finer until the sand is too coarse to resolve them. If you were to take a picture of, say, the central 2 inches of the track drawn, it would show roughly the same amount of detail for the same ball size and amount of sand, regardless of the size of the table. But the features are proportionally larger for a larger table (e.g., the spacing between overlapping paths). For instance, if I take a picture of seash5 drawn on my 22" end table, and I take a picture of the same track drawn on the 36" coffee table, such that the entire Design just fits inside the frame of the photo, then when comparing the two images, the latter will appear to have finer sand and finer details; but if I take both pictures from the same Distance from the glass, the sand will have the same apparent size and the same detail, but the path on the larger table will be magnified compared to the smaller table. Unless there isn't enough sand to draw a path, if you add more sand to the center, what will happen is that the ball will just push it around and leave virtually the same amount of sand behind. If you use a smaller ball, you'll see a little more detail since the ball won't flatten the sand as much (it draws a narrower path with less overlap). I would encourage experimenting with Different ball sizes and amounts of sand. Another interesting possibility is to change the shape of the object pushing the sand--a cylinder, for example (like a hockey puck) might create a Different effect than a ball. | |||||
| RE: One vs Two balls on 3' wooden table | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage | |
| @Don, "Can anyone point me to some reading material that might help me progress into a more complex track making game?" Welcome to my world! First off - although I'm pretty sure when it comes to sand plotting, I have more area under the curve than most - I'm no authority. But with regard to compexity - I would Divide it, for now, into those tracks that are generated algorithmically, and those not. So the pumpkin track, and any tracks that you recognize (including text), are non-algorithmic. All the others -'crop circles', spikey or swirly/loopy spirals, and fractals - are created via multilayered recipes (instructions) -aka algorithms. Both branches are infinite Design spaces. Markyland created Sisyphus For The Rest Of Us so that people could more easily explore non-alg space. If you're interested in algorithmic pattern space - start googling. All you need to do is place the connect-the-dots in the right order :). | |||||
| RE: Shipping Woes | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | heropup | Beta releases and bugs | |
| Your experience sounds very similar to mine, which you can read about in this thread: I believe the responsibility is on FedEx to use proper handling procedures. A shipment that weighs nearly 100 pounds and has a label on it that says two people are needed to lift it, should not be carted over uneven pavement by a single employee and rolled corner over corner, which is what happened to me. FedEx is being paid for this service and such practices, in my opinion, are not compliant. That said, modification to the package Design could help reduce problems caused by rough handling. I suspect that the cardboard insert placed underneath the table could push against the metal support arms that hold the Sisbot, if the side of the box were pressed in. If this insert were altered (for example, modifying the profile so that part of it sits under the outer edge of the table), then it would provide more resistance to being pushed into these supports. | |||||

I'm sure a few more crazier ideas will shake loose eventually. Live Title Card. | RE: Outer two inches of patterns not visible | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage
| Hi Hunter - You are not the only one who would prefer the LED shield ring to be smaller, and not overlap the sand field so much. The Design process in making this choice WAs a compromise between showing as much of the sand as possible vs. minimizing the potential for Direct line of sight to the LED's (which can be very Distracting from across a room). This is very angle dependent - not a factor when looking straight down on the table, but is while seated 3+ meters away - especially with the end table version, since it's LEDs are significantly higher than t ... | |||||
| Outer two inches of patterns not visible | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | hdubose1 | Table Usage | |
| The circumference of the drawable area on the table’s “canvas” is larger than the circumference of the inner-hole of the top ring. As a result, the outer 1-2 inches of many patterns are not visible unless I look at the table up-close and at an awkward viewing angle. When I compare images of the end table used for your Kickstarter campaign with images of your actual production tables, I can see that the width of the top ring has been increased and that the circumference of the inner hole has been decreased. My gut reaction is that the larger inner hole in the top rings from your pre-production units would have been preferable because it would not have resulted in the outside edges of patterns being obscured. But I'm sure that there must be some good reasons for this that I'm not considering. Could you please explain what the Design considerations were that led you to make this change? Thanks. | |||||
