| RE: set track path | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | Bruce | Community Tracks | |
| ... complex problem (how do you make a single, continuous path through a large number of unordered path segments that touch each other). The only WAy to have absolute Control of vertex order is to create the track by "hand" (draw it using vector software), or to use an algorithmic approach to making the points that creates them in a specific order. | |||||
| App Doesn't Recognize Table | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | texspuds | App Usage | |
| My phone app doesn't recognize my table any more. I have deleted the app and re-installed it and have followed the directions to reset the table but never did see a place to reset it to factory settings. I have version 1.10.25 of the firmware. I would like to be able to access the table. Since I can't Control the timer since it doesn't recognize the table, it's turning off part of the day and then coming on. Anyone got any suggestions to fix this situation? Thx | |||||
| RE: Might be a copy ... | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | Bruce | Other Development | |
| @heropup - Thanks for so eloquently expressing these sentiments. It certainly impacts me when I see copying of my work without attribution - but it is something I've experienced ever since I showed Eggbot and Sisyphus at the first Maker Faire in San Mateo, in 2006. Often, it's engineers who look at my stuff simply as a fun challenge to recreate, and are oblivious to the "art" part. But it's the art side that has been, and will always be my driving force, not recognition. More people experiencing motion Control art - either as consumers or creators - remains the goal. | |||||
| Can I connect remotely? | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | brighamstoker | Connectivity | |
| So, my new table is in the WAiting room of my office. I would love to be able to connect to it from home to turn it off on weekends, Control it when I'm not there, etc. Is there a WAy to connect remotely to the table? | |||||
| RE: Mini surging/accelerating | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage | |
| Hi @mikewand14 - Glad to hear you and your family are enjoying it! I can see the periodic acceleration / deceleration in your video - but this is within what I consider "normal" Sisyphus function. There are several reasons for ball velocity to vary during track play. The primary one is that the robotic mechanism that moves the magnet(s) has mass, and therefore, the motion Control software is designed to slow down before a corner so it doesn't make a knocking sound (the sharper the corner the more the decel). That is why you see it happen on the track in your video repeatedly. I wrote this code, and it isn't perfect - when the ball is moving mostly in the rotational axis (Theta), and followed by a mostly in/out linear more (Rho), it doesn't always Match the velocities perfectly. This will get tweaked in the future, and may help it look better to you. Lastly, you will notice that the ball "stutters" (wobbles) a bit at times. This is because the sand grains are not negligible in size compared to the ball, and they perturb it. This, plus the inherent flexibility of the magnetic coupling, lends itself to the ball's velocity "bouncing" a bit at certain speeds and sand depths. Hopefully, the velocity variation you're seeing doesn't spoil the effect. | |||||
| RE: Beep on Pause | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | dithermaster | App Updates | |
| Neither does my 3D printer but there are some GCode files I can "print" that make it play music using different speeds of the stepper motors. Depending on how much Control you have over the stepper drivers maybe you could do something like that. I think it's even possible without moving the motors much. | |||||
| RE: Track organization. | 3 Relevance | 6 years ago | Bruce | App Usage | |
| All your suggestions are good - and are underway. The next release of firmware and app will address them. As for the terrible names of my tracks - guilty! My excuse (admittedly lame): I built the first Sisyphus in 1998, and I WAs still using old DOS hardware to Control my diY CNC creations (Sisyphus being a direct "offspring"). Even though early Windows versions started to allow longer file names, the 8.3 restriction stayed with me for quite a while! | |||||

| ... the app these details are in the respective app store. Can I opt not to update? For the app this is a setting on your phone and not anything we can Control. On the firmware, we do not auto update. However, a couple possible explanations occurred to me. When loading the app it always checks for an update and prompts you to update. Is it possible this WAs clicked through without fully reading? Are there any others in your residence connecting to the table that may have triggered an update inadvertently or otherwise? When browsing the tracks in IOS the UI ... | |||||

| Now serving! I aim to use these two servos to Control dual sided ball parks. One per side of the table for a total of 4 ball locations. If I can get the balls out of the play area, I should be able to have more room for cleanup tracks that go outside Rho 1. Tomorrow is testing day for the servos and optical end stop limit switches. | Hey are there any updates on Alexa integration? Really eager to get this going. If not can I get confirmation that it won’t be a big deal to add a smart home on/off plug that I can Control with Alexa? I won’t use it often but it would be more convenient to use voice when sitting down to WAtch a movie and WAnting to turn down the table light than doing it through the app. Thanks! | |||||
| RE: iOS app suggestions | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | rlawrence | App Updates | |
| I love my mini ! Some day when I have more money I hope to buy a bigger table in addition !! I would like to suggest 1) a user-adjustable (or multiple choice) time delay pause between track (instead of just indefinite pause which is also good) 2) LIVE drawing, where the smart phone device could be used as a virtual joystick to Control the ball and/or the lights in real time 3) easier playlist manipulation and re-sorting (I think I’ve read that this one is already in the works ?) 4) is it possible, one day, to gain back the 1.5” of drawing real estate lost to two-ball mode ? I imagine it’s not much on the larger models but on the mini it’s more significant. thanks !!!! Sisyphus Rocks !! ???????????????????????????????????????? | |||||
| RE: DIY Table Theta Question | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | Bruce | Table Customization | |
| I guess, like most people, I pay most attention to the things that most interest me - in this case, Rho position Control is paramount, while Theta is "all relative," As for Sisyphus designs starting at "12 o'clock" - it never occurred to me to see it that WAy. Designs simply start "where they are" :). The first design after homing starts at Theta = 0 (regardless of the first Theta coordinate value in the *.thr file). What actual direction that is in relation to the physical world didn't concern me (since I create algorithmic tracks). If, however, I WAs using ... | |||||

| I am sure that the table will be awesome to WAtch, and I'll enjoy making new tracks for myself and the community, but my main purpose currently is the physical build and optimization. I am also looking forward to the programming aspect of this project. Some of the WAys that the physical interaction between Theta and Rho affect each other are going to be fun to dive into. It is pretty mind bending thinking about the differences between this machine and my printer and laser cutter. I have a bunch of parts modeled in CAD, and I am starting the buildup of the R ... | |||||

While I have built furniture in the past, what I am really after is the mechanical and electronic portions of this project. I have ordered most of the parts I will need with a bonus from work, so my project will call my office home, and distract guests along with the other "toys" that I have on hand. Some parts have arrived today, so the journey begins! Here are a few of my goals that differ from standard tables: Make the sand bed from 3mm f ... | |||||
| RE: Design Question on Base Orientation for Making Tracks | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | Bruce | Community Tracks | |
| You touch on an interesting point. Yes, there is an absolute meaning of "up". It is determined by where "home" is for the Theta (rotational) axis - which is a physical sensor in fixed location. At this point in development, we haven't been religious about handling Theta - as opposed to Rho, where things are not at all forgiving if you start in the wrong place. For now, up is the Theta heading after the first homing after bootup (sensored). Tracks in a playlist start (Theta-wise) wherever they find themselves. (Ability to Control this will improve...) | |||||

| @asjolund - This is the right place to post! Thanks for relay this info - we learn far faster from our growing user experience. I'm not familiar with the Qi charger specs, but will pass this along to our embedded systems engineer to see whether this is a limitation of the Raspberry Pi, our Control board (which powers the Pi), or Qi chargers in general. | RE: Adding colored LEDs | 3 Relevance | 8 years ago | jessicarunnels | Table Customization | |
| There is a reboot process for the strip so it can figure out how long it actually is. 🙂 Unplug the strip power adapter from mains power. While unplugged, add your strip extensions. After adding strips, plug the power adapter back into mains power. Press the button on the LIFX Z Controller, for 1 second. The strip will flash, and 'chase' from the connector, down to the end of the strips. All the strips will light up, and you can Control the whole strip. | |||||

| It is not plugged into the computer, so it runs entirely separate from the table. That said, it is very easy to program it for all of the same functionality (and more) as the original strip. And as a bonus, you can Control it with a variety of smart home apps like HomeKit. 🙂 | |||||
| RE: DIY Table Theta Question | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | Bruce | Table Customization | |
| Welcome to our community! Though an unusual entrance route, we WAnt to support an open sharing of ideas. In answer to your question, in the Sisyphus coordinate system, positive Theta is CW. This is opposite of convention, where Theta = 0 is shown at 3 o'clock, and positive movement is CCW. The reason behind this "choice" WAs a simple error of mine during early development (where trials of multiple different mechanical and electrical configurations frequently flipped the directionality of the steppers). Since all my tracks were algorithmic and nonrepresentati ... | |||||
| DIY Table Theta Question | 3 Relevance | 7 years ago | makerbobdesigns | Table Customization | |
| I am building my own accent table for my office at work. I am going to add a mechanism inspired by Sisyphus design, but completely from scratch, with my own software and Control. I can post updates if Bruce is OK with it. Question: In order to use community (I also WAnt to publish) tracks, I need one bit of information that has conflicting posts. What direction would this .thr file be drawn? (0,1) (314.159,0) Positive theta. Is it CCW or CW? There are many posts that explain that theta "home" is at the "top" of a freshly homed start. There are also pos ... | |||||
