I have used pure baking soda - it works, and produces great detail - but just doesn't look as nice (IMO). | I just tried setting up the Mini Essential table I received but have run into trouble. On first powerup I WAs able to connect to the Sisyphus wifi network with the app. I then had the Mini connect to my office's guest wifi network. It seems that the Mini WAs able to connect to the guest wifi but I WAs not able to in turn connect to the Mini with the app. I'm guessing the wifi security settings will not allow device-to-device connection. Unfortunately there is no WAy to turn off the guest wifi as suggested in this article (it's in an office of 300 people) s ... | |||||

| Hi Rich, Welcome to the forum! Glad to hear about (and see) some of your experiments. I understand about WAnting to hide the "homing line." There isn't a perfect (i.e. fast) WAy to get rid of it - it just has to be written over by subsequent tracks. The only time homing is done is on power up, and when "manually" changing tracks or playlists. We are working on making homing "smarter" - meaning, if the ball is at the periphery (Rho=1), the ball shouldn't need to go the center (Rho=0), but can start where it is if the next track requested can start at Rho=1. ... | |||||

No arcs, splines, etc. Start and end your tracks either at the center or the edge of the circle. Check the resulting thr file. The rho value of the first and last vertex in the file should be either 0 or 1 (start and end can be the same rho). Rho = 1 is anywhere on your boundary circle. | Thanks Ray. Some notes on your document: This paragraph: "All Files must start with a 0,0 or 0,1 position. The end pair of numbers in the file must end with rho value opposite of the rho value in the first pair (if you start with a 0,0 you end with a theta, 0)" says three different and conflicting things. None of them are true. In fact, you must start with rho equal to 0 or 1. The theta values don't matter. The initial theta is treated as a "starting theta" and all subsequent thetas are relative to it. The ending theta does not need to be 0 or the starting theta. This note "There are 2 'types' of instructions that the table can understand based on the difference between the theta values in the next set of instructions in the data set." is also not strictly true. The table only has one type of instruction, and that's a theta,rho pair. It moves that ball to that new position, interpolating in polar coordinates to get there. That's all. There isn't anything special about an erase (except the filename, which makes it run faster). In my path generators some of them think in polar but convert to cartesian, and then all of them subdivide cartesian lines or bezier segments down until they are small enough and then output them as .thr polar. In that backend I also look for "too small" of polar movements and remove Points to keep file sizes down. The values I use for cartesian subdivison and polar Point removal are tuned to not make artifacts, but also not make too big of file. | |||||

| My daughter figured out a WAy to make my table much quieter. She first noticed that the sisbot (if that's the right term) made no noise at all when disconnected from the table. However, she could feel it vibrating. So she figured the problem WAs the transference of that vibration to the table. The table itself then acts like a drum and amplifies the sound. Next, she cut eight octagonal rubber WAshers out of a wide rubber band. She added two to each of the four screw-fasteners (also, pictured below). | I have written a program (in Windows Small Basic) that generates 3 lines of text and writes out a .thr file to play on any table. I would appreciate if I can get some folks in the community to test it and give comments. It seems pretty bulletproof at this Point but the interface is very basic. The program has an attached data file with the character information for small and large letters as well as numbers (so it can be edited for improvement if desired) All it needs are these 2 files to be in the same directory - the .thr file will be written to the same place. Space is limited and the message has limits in size on each line - it will not let you exceed the boundaries of the table. I attached a picture of the output too. | ... along the WAy, the table dropped off my home network and couldn't be found / would have trouble being found via browser or app. Ultimately, I have had to unplug the table altogether to get it back on the network. Often when the browser or app would be searching for the table, it would stutter again, but usually once it connected it would behave normally. I always assumed this WAs just standard behavior (I see the same kind of pausing of movement when uploading tracks), but now it is stuttering all the time even when I am not trying to access it via browser ... | |||||

| My table stutters and pauses when drawing a track. It has been doing for quite a while. At first, I just figured that it WAs just something to expect/deal with even though it never made a lot of sense to me why it would be happening at all. But this problem seems to be getting worse and worse -- to the Point now where it will just stop completely for periods of time in the middle of a track. Some guidelines: Low iron contamination - any ferromagnetic impurities will stick to the ball, and although ball whiskers can be "interesting", it is not pleasing (IMO). White provides the best shadow contrasting. Finer is better, up to a Point. Eventually, when particles of any kind get small enough, they become "sticky", due to van der WAals forces. | ... files. At this Point I choose the file to download "thr" file. I click download and the black dots spin around and around. The first time I did this, the track did download. Ever since then, I try to download other tracks and I get the error message "could not make request". I guess I could put my number here and maybe someone with WAy more smarts than me could call and help WAlk me through it? PS. First off - although I'm pretty sure when it comes to sand plotting, I have more area under the curve than most - I'm no authority. But with regard to compexity - I would divide it, for now, into those tracks that are generated algorithmically, and those not. So the pumpkin track, and any tracks that you recognize (including text), are non-algorithmic. All the others -'crop circles', spikey or swirly/loopy spirals, and fractals - are created via multilayered recipes (instructions) -aka algorithms. Both branches are infinite design spaces. Markyland created Sisyphus For The Rest Of Us so that people could more easily explore non-alg space. If you're interested in algorithmic pattern space - start googling. All you need to do is place the connect-the-dots in the right order :). | |||||

| So that's what those two tracks are for, I WAs hesitant to attach or detach anything, but those two piqued my curiosity for sure. Thanks for the reply and info, just what I WAs looking for. I'll continue with a little bit more off topic as heropup did. I toyed around with sisyphus for the rest of us, and wintopo today. Using some mandala images I WAs able to get a couple of fairly basic tracks created, but nothing as complex as I feel can be accomplished in other WAys. | Recently received my 3' table, setup WAs easy, its been running great. I went through a variety of tracks in the beginning to see what it can do, and noticed that it WAs only using one ball. I figured it must be select tracks that use two. I ended up playing the default playlist, and at some Point it began using two balls, which then appeared to continue doing so on tracks that previously only ran with one...perhaps my memory is bad. Had a power outage the other day due to some electrical work being done, so it had to reboot, and its now been back to a sin ... | |||||

| Hi @Heropup (and @Jessica), Thanks to both of you - Heropup for first posting this hack, and later, Jessica for reminding me of this color option hack and documenting your steps. I've by been playing with LIFX Z strips for more than a week now, and am pretty impressed. At first I WAs a bit skeptical - the whole "colored LED thing" has been around for a while, and it's usually done in a WAy that I find lacks subtlety (to put it mildly). I still don't think adding color to Sisyphus is essential, or even better - but the clincher (for me) is that the LIFX stri ... | |||||

This probably deserves its own thread at this Point, but I'm very interested in the same answer. Thanks to Cameron I now have "play" and "pause" working on one of my Flic buttons. On another, I'd love to be able to adjust the LED brightness level (0, 0.5, 1, etc.), as well as perhaps initiate an "erase" pattern. What are these web requests? Is there a published list somewhere? | I have a 3 foot table, with occasional connection "quirks". I'm trying to identify the source of the issue, both to make my family happier and to help others do the same. I think that part of my problem is that the antenna is on the RPi board itself. I'm reasonably sure this is an omni-directional chip antenna, but it is going to be influenced by the structure of the table, and especially by any metal parts. It likely does not help that the direct line of sight from my table's RPi to the nearest access Point passes directly through the metal band around the rim of the table. (The part that supports the outside veneer band.) I know the top most veneer ring is glued to plexiglass, and unless someone decided to aluminize it, that, the wood, and the glue would be nearly transparent to 2.4 GHz. The RPi is attached to the underside of the plate that holds the sisbot's motors and the rest of the electronics. I suspect from photographs of the sisbot removed from the table that plate is aluminum. If so, that would likely be a reflector at 2.4 GHz, and limit the field of view of the antenna by Pointing the signal generally towards the floor. What is the sand tray made of? I know it can't be anything ferromagnetic or the whole thing wouldn't work at all. My WiFi is provided by a collection of Ubiquity Unifi AP and AP-AC-Lite access Points. I can always add one more if I can find the right place to put it... Any thoughts? | |||||
