| Ball Bearing Magnetic Properties | 4 Relevance | 5 years ago | SteveTheEvans | Table Customization | |
| I have a new mini with which I WAnt to experiment with different ball sizes. I'm not sure which ball bearing Material I need to use. Stainless steel is generally not highly attracted to magnets, but this is what most of the ball bearing variety kits are made of. What Material (or stainless steel grade) are the balls that come with the Sisyphus made of, and what other Materials/grades will also work? | |||||

| We understand your frustrations - which is why we've discontinued two-ball mode as a "standard" feature (it can still be ordered as an add-on). Despite our concerted efforts to make it bullet proof, we haven't been able to make it 100% reliable. It's extremely unforgiving (as you've experienced) - any travel past Rho = 1 is at risk of hitting it. And yes, Community tracks may have out of bounds vertices, but they "should" be caught and clamped to 1 by our software. It's evidently not working all the time (and not every user has updated to the most recent firmware). In answer to your question: The ballpark is affixed using strong double-edged tape (carpet tape). To remove it, carefully work a "blade" (butter knife) in between it and the cushion Material it's stuck to. Gently pry the ballpark upward while holding the cushion Material down at the rising edge of the ballpark so the cushion separates from it (and isn't pulled up with it). | |||||

| @rick-yeh This is definitely not normal function -- I will alert our support team, but also, please start a ticket so we can keep track of it: follow up: Support is already working with you (they suspect the dust is from the cardboard WAffle-board padding which we cut to size in our shop) and have relayed instructions for removing it and inspecting the low-friction pad on the magnet for signs of wear or foreign Material. Rest assured - we will make sure the problem is fixed! | |||||
| RE: Default track after reset | 2 Relevance | 5 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage | |
| Yes. The key is putting the default track into a playlist. The current behavior of Sisyphi after bootup, is to play the playlist that WAs playing when it WAs last powered. If it WAs not playing a playlist, it plays the Default playlist. So just create a new playlist with your desired default track in it. Note: if you WAnt a single track in a playlist, you must add it twice (playlists must have more than one track). This is sort of a safeguard against playing a single track in repeat mode, which can cause the ball to retrace the exact same path 100's - 1000's ... | |||||

| @stevetheevans - Pretty much any ferromagnetic object you place over the magnet will get pulled through the sand. Spheres are much nicer (IMO) because they roll (as opposed to skidding). As far as Material, all non-stainless alloys ("carbon steels") will work, and you really don't need bearings that are high precision (closer to a perfect sphere) or hardened. And you're partially correct about stainless - many alloys are very weakly attracted to a magnet (300-series) - but 400-series are ferromagnetic and work fine. Home Depot carries a small variety of single ball bearings in their specialty fastener section. | |||||

| Thanks Bruce for the instructions. It went amazingly well.. I WAs afraid that the removal of the ballpark would damage the cushion Material but it WAs indeed very easy, with the butter knife.. And yes, for those who would like to do the same, HOLD DOWN the fabric and proceed slowly by "cutting" and prying underneath. You mentioned "carpet tape".. For me, looks more like spray glue... Anyway, the process left absolutely no trace, no glue, nothing from the ballpark on the table fabric... Very happy! Thanks again Attachment : No_trace.jpg Attachment ... | |||||

| On the 3 foot diameter coffee table, the metal rim that supports the glass is about 1/2 inch in width, so I would not use any of the strips that are wider than that. To be sure, I'd choose something as small as possible. Also, I think the surface mount seals, rather than the flange mount, are the ones you should be looking at. The other consideration is the Material; there seem to be two types: EPDM and silicone. The former is used in the seals found on refrigerators. Silicone, however, is oil-resistant and in my experience, offers even greater durability. However, I don't know if silicone might be too slippery for the glass, since some silicones don't have the "grippy" feel that other synthetic rubbers have (I used to have a silicone phone case, which I hated because it kept slipping out of my hands). I think EPDM should work fine but I can't be sure. Based on these considerations I would look at 93085K21, 93085K93, 93085K52, 93085K35, 9141K168. | |||||

| ... the plug on the power supply, WAit 10 seconds, and plug back in). If you see the same problem, take a look under the table and see if there is anything obvious obstructing the movement of the arm that carries the magnet. Since you table is brand new, it is possible that something shifted or some packing Material found its WAy onto the mechanism. I've sent a note to our support desk, which is the best place to follow-up on any issues like this. If the problem does not resolve after power cycling, we will follow up with your there (support@sisyphus-industries ... | |||||
| RE: One vs Two balls on 3' wooden table | 2 Relevance | 8 years ago | Bruce | Table Usage | |
| @Don, "Can anyone point me to some reading Material that might help me progress into a more complex track making game?" Welcome to my world! First off - although I'm pretty sure when it comes to sand plotting, I have more area under the curve than most - I'm no authority. But with regard to compexity - I would divide it, for now, into those tracks that are generated algorithmically, and those not. So the pumpkin track, and any tracks that you recognize (including text), are non-algorithmic. All the others -'crop circles', spikey or swirly/loopy spirals, and fractals - are created via multilayered recipes (instructions) -aka algorithms. Both branches are infinite design spaces. Markyland created Sisyphus For The Rest Of Us so that people could more easily explore non-alg space. If you're interested in algorithmic pattern space - start googling. All you need to do is place the connect-the-dots in the right order :). | |||||

| So that's what those two tracks are for, I WAs hesitant to attach or detach anything, but those two piqued my curiosity for sure. Thanks for the reply and info, just what I WAs looking for. I'll continue with a little bit more off topic as heropup did. I toyed around with sisyphus for the rest of us, and wintopo today. Using some mandala images I WAs able to get a couple of fairly basic tracks created, but nothing as complex as I feel can be accomplished in other WAys.
