Is it possible to do an SD card backup to laptop in case the card ever fails?

This is possible. The steps vary depending on laptop OS but use a SD imaging utility such as win 32 disk imager or DD in command line on macs. There's a number of ways to accomplish this but I would suggest creating the backup and then restoring to a separate SD card and testing it before depending on it.
