Revitalizing the Holland Family Center: Installation of Custom Sisyphus Sculpture

2024 – Austin, TX – The Holland Family Center at The University of Texas at Austin has undergone a remarkable transformation with the installation of a custom Sisyphus kinetic sculpture. The new installation, designed and installed by Sisyphus Industries, has brought new life to the student communal area; blending art, science, and technology in an inspiring and serene space.

The Challenge and Vision

Tasked with reimagining this prime space, Tim Wiess, head of Student Affairs, sought a captivating yet calming replacement that would honor the space’s original intent while providing a modern, zen-like atmosphere.

Tim’s search led him to Sisyphus through an unexpected source— a float spa. After experiencing a smaller, commercial version of Sisyphus’s kinetic art at the spa, he realized its potential as the perfect solution for the student center. The kinetic sculpture not only brought the calming movement of sand to the space but also aligned with the university’s needs both structurally, and functionally.

“We were asking them to custom design something that would fit in an existing structure. Which is not as common.” says Tim. After speaking with the Sisyphus Industries team, and looking at their extensive track record, he knew they were up to the challenge.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Over two years of planning culminated in the summer of 2024, when Bruce Shapiro, the Artist behind Sisyphus, and his team began the installation process.

The installation was completed successfully, with the team meticulously adjusting the sculpture to fit perfectly within the unconventional, pre-existing space. New lighting solutions, including custom louvers, were installed to enhance the sculpture without distracting viewers or compromising the center’s tranquil atmosphere.

The Sisyphus team also addressed technological aspects, ensuring the sculpture was integrated into the university’s internal network while maintaining a secure control access. The system now operates smoothly, captivating students and staff alike.

A New Hub of Inspiration

The finished Sisyphus sculpture has quickly become a centerpiece in the Holland Family Center, attracting students and visitors who are drawn to its hypnotic movements and calming presence. “The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive,” Tim shared. “Students are naturally gravitating towards it, often spending time studying or socializing around it.”

Looking ahead, the university plans to launch phase two for the sculpture, incorporating custom designs inspired by the university’s geosciences program. “I’m excited about it because it makes what is already a cool kinetic sculpture into something representative of our science.” says Tim.

This Sisyphus installation marks one of many permanent academic installations across the globe. “Having my work in an academic setting is incredibly fulfilling,” Bruce Shapiro expressed.
