Kinetic Art Comes to Life at the University of Utah: Sisyphus Industries Installs Three Medusae

Sisyphus Industries is proud to announce the permanent installation of Three Medusae, a large-scale kinetic art piece now on display in the newly opened L. S. Skaggs Applied Science Building at the University of Utah. Blending science, engineering, and art, this mesmerizing kinetic triptych sparks curiosity and inspiration throughout the building.

Designed, engineered, and installed by Sisyphus Industries CEO and Artist, Bruce Shapiro, Three Medusae reflects his decades-long exploration of motion control as an artistic medium.

“My work as a kinetic artist spans over three decades of fascination and obsession using the industrial technology of Motion Control. Straddling both science and art, this medium serves not only as a novel form of artistic expression, but also offers rich opportunities for STEM education.”

He adds,

“Three Medusae is my newest, and perhaps most beguiling creation: How can extremely simple mechanical systems evoke highly complex and beautiful behavior by precisely choreographing their movement?”

Also on display is Shapiro’s iconic Sisyphus Table, which endlessly draws magnetically-driven patterns in sand beneath a tempered glass top, bringing museum-quality kinetic art into an interactive and functional furniture.

Handcrafted, Precision-Made in the USA

Like all Sisyphus Industries pieces, Three Medusae was handcrafted in Minneapolis by our small, dedicated team of designers, craftspeople, and engineers. The installation joins a growing number of Sisyphus works across the globe enriching classrooms, offices, wellness spaces, and public institutions.

At the heart of every Sisyphus creation is a commitment to craftsmanship, beauty, and engineering excellence, qualities that have made the company a global leader in kinetic art.
